Elemental

2019

This body of work draws its inspiration from ancient poetry and natural landscapes.

One thousand three hundred and thirty couplets were written in Tamil script by the ancient poet Thiruvalluvar around 500CE, as sgraffito inscriptions on palm leaves.

They covered the entire gamut of the human condition and the natural world, and of immediate, contemporary relevance, defying the passage of time.

Exploring verticality and multiple layering of high-fired glazes, the vessel forms are made in stoneware clay bodies, oxidation and reduction fired with Chun copper red, textured with crawling glazes, and Simone Fraser’s dry glazes.
